Stop Dripping, Leaky Taps
A dripping tap can waste up to one litre of water an hour. That’s the equivalent to 7880 litres of water a year, literally down the drain. If you’re paying the water bill, that can add up over months, especially if you have multiple dripping taps. Not only the cost of water, but also the environmental cost of wasted water, the stain you develop in the sink, and the very frustrating dripping tap noise.
Luckily, it is very easy to resolve. Most dripping taps can be fixed by replacing a washer, cartridge, or in the worst case scenario, replacing the entire tap fitting.
Taps can also leak from around the tap, from joins in the handles, or the base. This could be wear and tear on the tap O-rings, or a problem with the water flow.

Lead-Free Tapware: New NZ Building Code Requirements
From 2 May 2026, all new and replacement taps, mixers, and plumbing fittings installed in contact with drinking water must be lead-free (maximum 0.25% lead content in copper alloy products). This is a change to the NZ Building Code (Acceptable Solution G12/AS1, Amendment 14).
The old limit was 4.5% lead. The new 0.25% limit aligns New Zealand with international standards and protects your family’s health. Lead can leach from brass fittings into drinking water, and is particularly harmful to young children and pregnant women.
What does this mean for you?
- Existing taps do NOT need to be replaced. The new rules apply to new installations and replacements only.
- Replacing a tap? Any new tap or mixer installed after 2 May 2026 must be lead-free certified.
- Buying taps online? Be careful. Cheap imported tapware may not comply. Look for WaterMark certification or DR marking.
- Stainless steel taps are inherently lead-free and fully compliant.
